La Spinetta Piedmont
LA SPINETTA Castagnole is the original cellar, located in the Asti area northwest of Alba. Surrounded by 70 hectares of Moscato and Barbera d'Asti vineyards, this is the place where LA SPINETTA was founded in 1977. The Rivettis remodeled and expanded the cellar and winery in the mid-1980s. Though more modern in style, cathedral ceilings and an open space characterize the impressive barrique cellar. The original barrel room was once used as the tasting room, but a new space was added in 2010. Today the Castagnole Lanze cellar is the heart of the Moscato, Barbaresco and Barbera Cà di Pian production, as well the place they vinify two white wines, Pin and Barbera d'Asti Superiore Bionzo.
Giuseppe Contratto founded Contratto in 1867. This beautiful Estate was in the family’s hands for 126 years. In 1993, Carlo Bocchino purchased the property. The historical cellars underwent substantial renovations. In 2011, Giorgio Rivetti and the team of La Spinetta were able to take ownership of this understated jewel with the goal of reviving Contratto to its former glory. Celebrating its 150 years of distinguished history and wine making, Contratto winery was the first in Italy to make vintage “Metodo Classico" sparkling wine.
Production began in the 1950's under the guidance of Giuseppe Damonte. Giuseppe was a visionary, understanding that in the 50's, the Roero had not yet maximized its vineyard and thus grape-growing potential. Today the estate is run by Massimo and Roberto Damonte, Guiseppe’s sons, who inherited their father’s passion for winemaking.
E. Pira e Figli "Chiara Boschis"
Pira is an old family of viticolturists that -between the end of '800 and the beginning of '900- became wine-producers. This prosperous patrirachal family unit declined as all its male components started to die young one after another, until the tragic end of Luigi Pira, a noble man who believed in the importance of traditions: the last one to tread the grapes and to make wine without mechanical devices. About a year after his death, his sisters, who couldn't manage the family business but were willing to carry on the tradition, sold the farm to their old friends family Boschis. Now Chiara Boschis, after a degree in Economics, manages the farm following her passion for wine and believing in this "great small farm". The output is still very small (about 12.000 bottles each year) and the wine is exclusively made from grapes grown in our vineyard ( about two and a half hectares located in Connubi, one of the best vineyards in Barolo).
Giorgio and Ezio have been longtime friends; they share a passion for wine and a love of horses. Giorgio, who makes three award-winning single vineyard Barbareschi, was the ideal consultant for Ezio’s new project. He extended the use of La Spinetta’s winery and cellar for the production of the lovely Cocito Barbaresco Baluchin and, in exchange, Ezio offered to help take care of Giorgio’s horses. It’s a perfect collaboration!
