Celebrating our Female Winemakers

In celebration of International Women’s Day we would like to celebrate the woman winemakers that we proudly represent in our portfolio. They each bring their knowledge, experience, and uniqueness to the table and it clearly shows. They are incredible and a true inspiration. Read the stories of Chiara Boschis from E. Pira & Figli, Elena Luca from BiancaVigna, and Aurelia Fabrizio from Rocca del Principe.

Chiara Boschis, E. Pira & Figli

Chiara is a farmer first. As a winemaker, she is a master of balance, crafting finessed and sophisticated wines that are some of the most aromatically dynamic expressions of Barolo today.

 “It was a very exciting time when I started. This group of friends and I, the “Barolo Boys”, as they are called now were always exchanging suggestions and ideas. We wanted to make Barolo the best we could. I remember in 1994, Giorgio (Rivetti) and I went around at night to green harvest, so that the neighbors wouldn’t see how many bunches we were cutting. When my father saw the result the next day, he said I was throwing away money, he was traditional and didn’t understand. But you know, I think, when you want to do something completely different, you have to do it your own way."  - Chiara Boschis


Elena Moschetta, BiancaVigna

Elena Moschetta is the head of Bianca Vigna winery and together with her brother, Enrico Moschetta, they have been producing Prosecco for 20 years. The wines are carefully farmed and crafted from three vineyards in Conegliano, Valdobbiadene.

 “I spent my childhood with my grandparents in the hills of Prosecco, tending their vineyards. I have so many memories of joy and also fatigue. Originally, I had even planned on going to winemaking school, but then changed my mind. I took a different path away from wine, but as we say, destiny always comes back knocking.

 Sitting with my husband and my brother one day, we started talking and thought, why don’t we start our own winery? We have beautiful vineyards, which are managed by my brother, who is also a winemaker. My husband’s company imports French wines into Italy and thus could help with the commercialization. I have the administrative background and experience. So, in 2004, we decided to put all of our strengths together and open the winery. And it’s paid off. We’re truly a family business in every sense of the meaning. BiancaVigna refers not only the color of the Prosecco grape (Bianca means white in Italian), but also my daughter’s name, Bianca, as we hope that the family tradition continues.” -Elena Moschetta

Aurelia Fabrizio

Together with her husband, Aurelia commanded the attention of critics and consumers alike through the sheer breadth of aromatics, minerals and compelling nuances displayed in their substantial Fiano di Avellino.

 Their philosophy is a simple one: low production in the vineyards means higher quality in the cellars. This principle informs all their decisions throughout production. The duo regularly performs green-harvests and employs no chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilizers.
